Family Class and Tidepooling: Natural History Museum, Saturday, March 17, 2007, Spectacular Sea Slugs, Discover the world of nudibranchs with Curator of Malacology Dr. Ángel Valdés. Begin with a visit to the Museum’s research collections, look at slugs through the scanning electronic microscope, and learn about their bodies during a nudibranch dissection. Then, join Dr. Valdés at Palos Verdes Peninsula for a tidepooling excursion. Participants provide their own transportation and lunch. Limited to 30 people. Grades 2 and up. KITE: Pasadena Playhouse, Sunday, March 18, 2007, 11 and 2 p.m. The Kids Interactive Theater Ensemble is theater for kids by kids. This group creates storytelling performances with special attention paid to thoughtful and entertaining youth-friendly material. The players, ages 9-14, present original plays they have created. Weird Nature: CalTech Beckman Auditorium, Saturday, March 10, 2007, 2 p.m. "Devious Defenses," a high-definition film, highlights animals astonishing natural defenses, such as camouflage, armor, smoke screens and even noxious sprays. Dressing crabs adorn themselves with treasures from the sea floor for camouflage. Fulmar chicks project vomit so foul it destroys the feather waterproofing of its predators. Hagfish smother their prey in a suffocating slime. Merrielle Spain of Caltech's Computation & Neural Systems Department will introduce the film and guide the post-screening discussion. $5. Family Free Day: Pasadena Museum of History, Sunday, March 11, 2007, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. A free day of art. See the exhibit Who Was Sam?, listen to a storyteller, join in a children's art workshop with the Pasadena Society of Artists, watch living history presentations featuring portrayals of Eva Fenyes, Benjamin Brown and Sam Hyde Harris, and celebrate the launch of the museum's newest children's book, "Painting the Beautiful."
